Some children spend hours every day on their smartphones. Why is this the case? Do you think this is a positive or a negative development?

The amount of time children are spending on their phones is growing. Despite of being a norm, this attachment of the young generation to their smartphones is a matter of concern.

Why smartphone are addictive is obvious to see. It is clear that they are the primary means of fun for children. Most kids spend hours on end playing online games on their phones. The game developers are culpable in that they have created and perfected features which give a quick dopamine hit making the games “virtual drugs”. On top of that, the games reward the players for spending more time on gameplay. Mobile games such as Clash of Clans encourage players to be online all the time by levelling them up faster than those who use the application moderately.

Another aspect of smartphones that draws more children is the presence of social apps. When all of the friends are online, children cannot resist the temptation of connecting with them. Platforms which are popular among the youth such as Snapchat, Tiktok and Instagram are seeing their users grow like wildflower. As the children will feel left out if they are not active online, there is no sign of this trend stopping soon.

From my point of view, this development brings more problems than the benefits it bestows. While it is undeniable that children are being more familiar with the use of information technology which is a great tool when come to learning, they are wasting their time on unproductive use. Playing games and communicating with peers is valuable, however mindlessly staring into the smartphones chasing virtual goals has no long-term advantage. Due to this technology, kids are being distracted from their education. At the same time, they are being exposed to harmful content through the internet. Needless to say, smartphones are not making the children smart.

In conclusion, parents and teachers have to take decisive steps in curbing the amount of time children are wasting on their smartphones. Technology can and should be utilized as a means of education. Otherwise, we have to brace for a dystopian future full of people having no discernable skill but reliant on their phone for survival.
