It is important for people to take risks, both in their professional lives and their personal lives. Do you think the advantages of taking risks outweigh the disadvantages?

There is an age-old adage that fortune favors the brave. But it does not mean that bravery always pays off.

One obvious benefit of taking a risk in life despite being uncertain regarding the outcome is the possibility of discovering new opportunities. There may be rewards lurking beyond the horizon, so it takes a leap of faith in order to gain them. This may be in the form of achieving fame and fortune by taking a career or business decision irrespective of probable threats. For an instance, one of the richest persons in the world Jeff Bezos took a chance on his dream by quitting his job in an IT firm and establishing Amazon which has now become an online giant. We can see how his high risk resulted in high rewards.

Apart from that, taking a more personal perspective, people always take a risk when starting relationships. When it comes to choosing a life partner, individuals pin their hope on another person by believing it will work out in the future, and they will have a happy conjugal life. Unless one is willing to bear the risk, he will remain single.

However, playing the risk-or-reward game may turn out to be costly. It is not uncommon to hear stories of people who took a chance in their business but instead of hitting big became bankrupt. Similarly, there are people who have gambled their fortune away in sports betting or casinos. Referring to the earlier point about marriage, there is always a risk that one ties the knot with someone without much deliberation and eventually must go through divorce. Such instances prompt the thinking that individuals should know the limits of their luck. Maybe, stability is a better option than trying new things.

In conclusion, to take or not to take a risk in life is a question that plagues all of us in different stages of our life. Perhaps, youngsters are keener on going headstrong into uncertainty, while aged people hedge their bets and are wiser. In my opinion, courage in the face of risks is not a lack of fear but a determination of one’s volition despite fear. So, as long as we believe in our ability, we should accept risks in life.
